When we improve our lifestyle with better nutrition, regular exercise, and time to good sleep, we get much better returns in terms of good and healthy physical as well as mental state than we could imagine. Thats why I had been trying to bring some healthy lifestyle changes to my daily routine so as to benefit from them in long run.

Few days back I was reading how small changes compounded over a long period of time can bring huge changes. For instance say I want to improve myself every day by 1%. This improvement could be in any subject, but for now let’s say it’s my reading habits. I want to read 1% more every day for next 1 year.

Now using the magic of compounding, a 1% change over 365 gives a improvement of 37x. Isn’t it amazing? Just a small change daily can lead to 37 times improvement in 1 year.

Let’s take another example which will resonate with business folks. Say as a businessmen/women, you want to double your profits in 3 years. 

So, if your business’s profit grows by 24% a year, you will achieve 100% growth in 3 years. 

Now to grow by 24% a year, you need to grow business profits by 2% a month. 

If business is making $10,000 profit a month, then it just needs to make extra $200 in first month, $202 in second month and so on.

As you see a small addition of $200 a month or $6.6 per day, will double a business’s profits in 3 years.

That’s the power of compounding.

Same principle applies in other areas of our lives too. For instance health. Just make simple healthy lifestyle changes to your daily routine, and you will get astonishing results in long term.

At an outset, key to a healthy life involves all of the below changes:

  • Eating fresh food (avoid preservatives)
  • Feeling good about one’s work
  • Taking regular breaks
  • Laughing with friends and family
  • Having a positive attitude about life
  • Enjoying nature
  • Be respectful towards all including nature.

Here are some small ideas on healthy lifestyle changes that I included in my daily routine and you can too with great health benefit potential in long run:

  1. Adopt whole-grain food items instead of white flour ones. For instance avoid white bread, pretzels, rolls, pizza as much as you can.
  2. Try to cook at home and include as much fresh food in each meal as you can; instead of going for easy and greasy restaurant items. This will save your health and also generate huge wealth in long run. I have talked about how in my post: How to get rich doing nothing
  3. Walk atleast 2 miles a day.
  4. Find reasons to laugh like crazy atleast once a day. It’s a healthy lifestyle necessity not an option.
  5. Add some books over your work table and place your laptop on it so you can work or read this post while standing instead of sitting or laying on bed.

There are so many things that we can alter without doing much and live a much healthier lifestyle.

What held me up

I literally had to change my mindset before adopting new healthy lifestyle changes. In reality, I needed to unlearn some previous notions of how daunting the process of exercise and fresh eating habit be.

It was quiet overwhelming when I think about how would I manage good healthy habits while traveling because I love to travel around.

It isn’t easy especially when you are in US because most of the food options you get on highways or airports are either fried or loaded with preservatives which is exactly opposite of a healthier meal.

So, I kept pushing the idea of switch to healthy life. Even though I did for a day or two, I couldn’t sustain it for long periods due to my love for travel.

Then, one day I was reading an amazing book – The power of habit by Charles Duhigg, which helped me understand if you want to change something big, then start from small step and repeat it over the time.

Gear up for next level

I started with simple baby 5 steps (mentioned above) with no or minimal efforts on my part.

Once I mastered them and fully merged each of those ideas into my daily routine, it was time to move to next level.

I started working on next set of ideas which require some efforts on my part and commitment.

I worked on one new habit at a time and until it is fully submerged into my routine, I do not move to the next habit. This proved to be very effective and kept be focused.

Here are new set of habits which I added one at a time to my routine:

Mаkіng time fоr Exеrсіѕе

Taking some time off everyday for exercise was a little challenging initially to be honest.

I always had more important things on plate and my heart kept telling me you could exercise tomorrow.

But this was the exact trap which kept me away from healthy lifestyle for so long. So, I listened to my head and ignored my heart here.

To manage time better, I incorporated exercise into work and commute.

For instance, I walk to work now. Even if I am taking a commute, I get down a station before and walk to the destination. This simple change in commute enforced me to exercise while I was just commuting.

For work, I spend lots of time in front of computers. So, I bought a standing table and added a reminder in my phone to tell me to stand up 1 hour before and after lunch.

These simple changes, help me exercise without my heart even realizing it. Smart na? 🙂

I recommend you to think about your routine and task you do on daily basis. Then think how you can incorporate exercise into it.

One of my friend, liked this idea and she loves to listen to music. So, now she added a reminder for herself to dance while listening. Simple.

It is easier said than done.

It’s hard to put kids on bed on time especially when they are super charged by the dessert they had at dinner.

Lesson Learned

don’t give desserts to kids after 6pm if you want them to sleep on time.

Apart from putting kids to bed on time, my other challenge was addictable TV series. Although I use streaming services which can be played any time later but still it’s hard. You know what I am talking about if you watched: Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Mad Dogs, etc.

But it’s also very import to get enough sleep and get early in the morning.

A walk in the morning or meditation is much more powerful than at any other time of the day.

Honestly I am currently struggling on this one of healthy lifestyle changes. So, I recommend to evaluate your own situation and try to avoid activities which delay you from going to bed on time.

Avоіd Addictions of all sort

There are lots of addictions but I am specifically talking about alcohol and smoking whether it’s cigrettes, cigars or weed.

It’s needless to say the harmful effects of these addictions on our health as well as wealth. Even addicts know it too.

There are other sorts of addictions such as caffeine addicts who need their shots of coffee or tea multiple times in a day.

I have realized from very early age the harmful effects of drinking alcohol or smoking so I never did them. This helped me tremendously over time which I have talked about in my post: Things to do in your 20s to be a millionaire.

Lean Diet

In today’s time, we’re bombarded with fatty, junk foods that are all too convenient.

To achieve healthy lifestyle, it’s important to ensure our body is getting the proper nutritional requirements to function at its best.

As I mentioned above it’s very difficult to maintain healthy eating habits especially for travellers.

But whenever we are at home, I try to eat healthy diet free of saturated fat, sugar & carbs. Instead replace them with healthy choices like whole grains, fresh fruits, green leaves and other vegetables.

I am confident that adopting these simple healthy lifestyle changes will definitely bring great benefits in the future.
