Believe me I am not in anyway trying to take the fun out of the delicious thanksgiving feast you’ve been looking forward to. I am simply suggesting a healthy keto thanksgiving plan that promises to keep the thanksgiving spirit alive through some enjoyable carb-free meal.

Thanksgiving is such an important day of the year for those who celebrate it around the world as it gives us an opportunity to be thankful to one another, a day that brings families and friends together and strengthens their bonds. It is a day to remember our ancestors and our history that has shaped our reality.

Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving dinner traditionally consists of high-carbohydrates but let’s face it, unhealthy as it may be, thanksgiving feast is quite irresistible. A combination of mashed potatoes, thick gravy, sweet baked beans, yams, cornbread, and some mouth-watering apple pie; all the makings of a deliciously high calorie meal.

For most of my life, the idea of diets only meant starving or eating tasteless, uncooked food. But thanks to a friend, who introduced me to the concept of Keto Diet. And technically, the ‘Ketogenic Diet’ isn’t even a diet. If done right, it can become a way of life. When I say this, the Keto diet is a savior for all the health-conscious people this festive season. All we have to do is cut down, nay, sacrifice a few unhealthy food items and replace them with healthy but super tasty substitutes.

Yes, I know it sounds crazy but healthy food can be delicious too!

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that in medicine is used primarily to treat difficult-to-control (refractory) epilepsy in children. The diet forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. – wikipedia

What is Keto Diet?

The keto diet works on a basic principle of minimizing the intake of carbohydrates (without eliminating them completely) which means the ‘semi-starved’ body will activate ‘ketogenesis’ or the production of ketones in the bloodstream.

The ‘ketones’ are produced in the liver and serve as alternate sources of energy that remain dormant otherwise. The protein intake has to be minimized which leaves a lot of room for delicious fats!

Though, some of Thanksgiving’s undeniable charm cruxes on the wonderfully scrumptious carbs, but with a little creativity and research, you can definitely pull off an incredible keto thanksgiving feast.

So, what can you eat?

Keto compliant foods include eggs, butter, cream, meats, nuts and seeds, avocados, low-carb vegetables like lettuce, zucchini, peppers, vegetable oil and a few condiments. The protein intake has to be minimized which leaves a lot of room for delicious fats!

How keto diet works?

  • Our bodies store glucose in the liver and muscles in the form of glycogen.
  • When we intake carbs in a controlled proportion, glycogen reserves are reduced and the insulin hormones decline. This allows fatty acids stored in your body to be released.
  • The level of carb restriction required to induce ketosis in our bodies is individualized. That means some people can limit their total carbs intake to 20 grams, while others can achieve ketosis while consuming twice that amount or more per day.

  • Studies show that cutting down carbohydrates automatically reduce our appetite and calorie intake.

Why stick to Keto on Thanksgiving?

You might wonder, why go through all of this trouble on the one day of the year we are exposed to a heavenly spread? If you are already on a Keto diet, you might understand how important it is to continue this diet despite the temptations. If you are just starting out, thanksgiving meal can be tricky for you to resist but you have to push through because:

  • Keto diet’s aim is to keep your body in a state of ketosis – the body burns fat for fuel.
  • For keto dieters, a single serving of mashed potatoes or slice of pie could disrupt the entire system out of ketosis and will raise their blood sugar.
  • It will be difficult to reverse your system back to keto cycle once you’ve disturbed it, hence making it hard for you to keep up.

  • Limit your carb intake to 20-50 grams a day. This will lower your blood sugar and insulin levels leading to release of the gathered fatty acids that your liver converts into ketones.
  • Consuming coconut oil provides your body with MCTs (Medium-Chain Triglycerides) that are quickly absorbed and converted into ketones by the liver.

  • Don’t completely depend on a diet but also engage your body in physical activities that will increase ketone levels during carb restriction.
  • Consume at least 50-60% of calories from a variety of healthy fats obtained from both plant and animal sources which will help boost your ketone levels.
  • Maintain a balanced protein intake. Too little protein can lead to muscle mass loss while excessive protein consumption might suppress ketone production.
